God is a merciful God, why can't he just forgive us? Why was it necessary for Jesus to die for us on

This is one of the most common questions asked, especially by non Christians and probably not understood by many Christians. I will therefore try to answer this question as briefly and simple as I can.

The Bible declares that all human being are sinners by nature. The Bible says that all stand condemned in God's sight; we are condemned before God and found without exception to be without excuse and without escape, facing the wrath of God. "There is none righteous, no, not one". David wrote "Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin? (Proverbs 20:9)The entire world is guilty before God "For we have sinned and come short of the glory of God." Therefore, all mankind is under the sentence of death because God is holy and he declared "The wages of sin is death".

God is just and holy.  The Holy God cannot stand sin and being just means to judge fairly.  We have sinned and deserve hell and condemnation. Justice demands the death of every soul that sins. We cannot get away with our sins by just praying or fasting or going to church. Our Holy God can by no means pardon the sinner without punishment.

Psalm 85:10 says "Mercy and truth are met together".  Because our Great God is merciful, and since nothing of man could meet the Divine requirements, God took upon himself toprovide His only son Jesus to be the lamb for the offering for the remission of the sins of the world. Jesus Christ suffered as our scapegoat – to die and go to hell in our place – because of our sins. His death put away sin by satisfying all that the justice of God required, which was death. "It is Christ that died..." and made God's mercy available to us. We have been redeemed with a price so that we can be reconciled to God. God has declared us "justified" and has forgiven us on the basis of Christ's blood. The sinless Jesus had become sin for us so that we could become the righteousness of God in Christ. The shed blood of Jesus on the cross accomplished both salvation and reconciliation and we now can be forgiven. On the cross, he appeased God's wrath, satisfied God's holy nature (justice and mercy) and delivered humanity from the guilt of sin. He died as the Savior who voluntarily accepted our blame, endured the agony, took the faults of many on himself and won eternal redemption and reconciliation. Paul wrote in Romans "In Adam all die", but in "Christ all are made alive". Amen
