This is a very powerful statement of Jesus expressing the importance of the word we speak. God will judge us by the words we've been speaking. This judgment is based on God's principle of sowing and reaping mentioned in Genesis 8:22 "As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never cease." We usually believe in cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, but we ignore "seedtime and harvest"!
Paul also warns in Galatians 6:7 "Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap."
Why is the word so powerful? I would like to go back to the beginning of creation. God created the whole universe by just speaking the word; and God said, "let there be light: and there was light". In Hebrews 11:3 it says ""through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear." God knows that what He said and says would come to pass. He spoke into existence the heavens and earth, the moon, the sun, the stars and the universe. He spoke into existence the animal kingdom and the vegetable kingdom. He just said and it did. This same power of words is given to us believers. Since we were created in the image of God, we were created to speak with the voice of faith. Once we speak the words they take root in our lives, grow up and come to pass – whether we realize it or not. What they produce is up to us. Therefore, it is very important to always speak positively. With our words we also determine our future. The words that speak affect our health, our wealth, our place in eternity. What we say today will determine where we will end up tomorrow.
In Matthew 12:34-35 "out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things; and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. "
